Class Mailing List Overview
A Classlist's mailing address is based on the subject, course number,
(primary) section number, and the indicator of the semester, which is
comprised of the year and two digits indicating the semester:
"10" for Spring, "20" for Summer and "30" for Fall.
For example, the course COMM2250001, taught in the Fall semester of
2022 represents:
Subject: |
COMM |
Course Number: |
2250 |
Section: |
001 |
Year: |
2022 |
Semester: |
30 |
And is assigned the list name of comm-2250-001-202230. The Classlist host is lists.upenn.edu
To send mail to all members of this class, address your email
message and send it to comm-2250-001-202230@lists.upenn.edu.
The course Instructor of the class is assigned as the list owner for each Classlist. Each school has assigned Classlist administrators who can assist Insructors with managing their Classlist.
It is the listowner's responsibility to handle problems with the list membership. Please see our
Classlist FAQ for common problems and questions about the Classlist service.
Since the Classlist service is an email based service, we do not create a Classlist unless the course Instructor has an email address registered in the Penn Directory database.
Please use the Faculty/Staff Directory Update Form to update your Directory listing, if necessary.
ISC rebuilds every Classlist each morning, from which we extract the data of classes and their student enrollment. The course Instructor and all students enrolled in the course
are automatically subscribed to the list by the Classlist process. As list members, they will receive all messages that are mailed to the list. Since
the Classlist service is an email based service, we do not subscribe
students who do not have an email address registered in the Penn Directory database.
The course Instructor or the school's Classlist administrator can add members who are not enrolled in
the class through the Classlist Request Menu.
Classlists all share some common features.
- Subscriber lists are private and only the course Instructor and Classlist administrators can review the list
of subscribed students.
- Messages sent to the list are archived in monthly logs that are available to all members of the list for the duration of the semester and can be accessed by the course Instructor for one month after the semester ends.
Each school has determined the following default properties for all Classlists in their school.
