PennNet filtering may affect off-campus users beginning April 11
March 30, 2006 :: Dave Millar, University Security Officer
On April 11, the University will implement new security measures at
Penn's external Internet gateway to block or redirect certain kinds of
Internet traffic. On-campus users won't be affected by these changes;
however, a small minority of users – those who use on-campus Windows-based
services from remote locations (home, University offices without direct
PennNet connectivity, and while traveling) -- may need to change configurations
or employ new methods for accessing campus Windows servers and workstations
remotely.
The new "edge filtering" measures will help protect Penn's
network from future viruses and worms. More
information about the edge filtering measures was published in the
March 28 issue of Almanac. A web site with information and documentation
for end users, LSPs, and
system administrators is available at www.upenn.edu/computing/security/edge_filtering/.
