May 2005 IT User Group Meetings

May 3, 2005 :: Amy Phillips, Information Systems & Computing

We are pleased to announce the following IT user group meetings scheduled for the month of May. Please mark your calendar!

Super User Group (SUG)
HARTS - A case study in technology strategy
Monday, May 9, 2005 - 12:00 Noon - 1:30 PM
Benjamin Franklin Room (218) - Houston Hall

HARTS (HARmonization of Technology Strategy) is an initiative within Information Systems and Computing to reach an improved level of higher-level technology strategy alignment among various ISC groups. Learn more about HARTS and how ISC uses it for technology coordination. We'll hear an overview of some of the products of the HARTS process, and then more detail about a few of them (including system/service monitoring and availability reporting). Always a crowd pleaser, Deke Kassabian will lead the discussion. In addition, the Spring 2005 Evaluation Teams will present their final results to the group.

WebSIG
Recent developments on SPIKE (Wharton portal) for mobile computing devices
Dan Alig, Wharton Computing and Information Technology (WCIT)
Monday, May 23rd, 3:00 - 4:30pm, Room 245, Huntsman Hall

It seems that Aladdin's Genie may be halfway out of the bottle: Mobile computing devices (PDAs, web-enabled cell phones, etc.) haven't quite achieved "phenomenal cosmic power" yet, but they certainly boast "itty-bitty living space" in their screen real estate. Ever wondered how to effectively present your web site on a very small screen? Come learn how folks at the Wharton School translated their heavily-trafficked SPIKE web portal into a version for use on mobile computing devices. (Note that this meeting will be held in a very nice presentation space in the not-itty-bitty Huntsman Hall.)

PAC-SIG
May 26, 2005; 2:00 pm to 3:30 pm; Ben Franklin Room, Houston Hall

Networking will present their proposed replacement for PAS-GINA at this quarter's PAC-SIG. Last quarter's meeting saw a lively discussion of the potential options Networking was considering to replace PAS-GINA; this meeting will have Andrew Riley presenting and taking questions on Networking's replacement choice. If you manage lab machines, you will not want to miss this one. Also included will be Steve Fabiani, ISC CTS, presenting on Machine Preparation for Classroom Deployment, and John Mulhern, ISC TSS, presenting on Supported Products.
