Required Security Measures for Your Computer
August 17, 2004 :: David Millar, Information Security Officer
The University is requiring the adoption of several security measures
designed to protect computers and data, and prevent the spread
of malicious viruses and worms to Internet users at Penn:
- Installing virus software configured for regular updates (daily
for Windows, weekly for Macintosh).
- Applying security patches to your operating system promptly.
- Assigning a strong administrative password to your computer
(Windows XP & 2000, Macintosh OS X).
- Activating your system’s firewall (Windows XP & Macintosh
OS X) – subject to your Local Support Provider’s
recommendation concerning firewalls.
General information about these and other security measures can
be found at http://www.upenn.edu/computing/security/.
College House residents should see http://www.rescomp.upenn.edu/ for
information tailored to their situation. Similarly, students living
off-campus and residents of Sansom East and West and the Greek
Houses should see http://www.upenn.edu/computing/isc/csg/crc/.
If you have questions, please contact your Local Support Provider
(LSP) or Information Technology Advisor (ITA) (http://www.upenn.edu/computing/view/support/ ),
who can advise you on specifics pertaining to your environment.
Faculty and staff should note that many departments across campus
already have effective strategies in place to meet these security
requirements.
