Explanation

Lookup table for majors and minors. Contains the short name, long name, and the Federal reporting code for the majors and minors currently in use in SRS.

Common Uses

• Displaying the actual name of a major or minor, for majors or minors that are retrieved from related tables.. ("Don't show the codes in the report. Show the English instead.")
• Retrieving the 6 digit code used by the Federal Government, for reports on majors and fields of studies at the University.

Cautions

• Even though this is called the "MAJOR" table, the codes in this table can be used in SRS for minors as well. This table also includes the areas that have been identified as "Minor only". The latter appear in the Approved Academic Program table with a start term of 1943C. In SRS, these can only be used for a minor, and not a major.
• The column named MAJOR_CODE was formerly named MAJOR_IPEDS. The code used for Federal reporting was formerly known as IPEDS. In 2000, the code became known as CIP2000. Every decade, the Federal government re-inventories the majors and fields of study that are to be included in reports, and codes are also re-evaluated. Historic data on old code assignments can be found in the MAJOR_CODE_HIST table.
