The short name for a major. A major is the academic area which makes up a major
component of a student's work. For graduate programs, this is the graduate
group. For example: a student may have a major in HIST. |

The full text name of the each major. For example:
the full name of the HIST major is History. |
| Major_Code |
The Classification of Instructional Program code used for reporting to
the Federal government. Formerly known as IPEDS (Integrated Post Secondary
Educational Survey) code, in 2000 these
became known as the CIP2000 codes. The previous code used may have changed.
For example, in 1990, the IPEDS code for History was 540101. In 2000, the
CIP2000 code for History was changed to 450801. The historic codes used
in previous years can be found in the MAJOR_CODE_HIST table, along with
the associated year. |
