Explanation

Lookup table for institution codes. Institutions are high schools and post-secondary institutions (colleges, universities, etc.). Contains the institution code and description, and the city, state and country where the institution is located. Location is useful for distinguishing between institutions with similar names, such as Trinity College in Hartford, CT (3899); in Ireland (991199); and in Washington, DC (5796).

Codes mainly correspond to Educational Testing Services (ETS) codes created for ETS tests, but additional codes have been created at Penn for institutions which did not yet have ETS codes. Additionally, codes from 1 - 6 indicate credit awarding programs such as advanced placement, credit-by-exam, etc.

Common Uses

• Displaying the actual name of an institution instead of the institution code that appears in one of the Related Tables. ("Don't show the codes in the report. Show the English instead.")

Cautions

• It is possible for the location elements (city, state and country) to be null for institutions.
