The teaching activity used in this section of the course, for example, lecture (LEC), recitation(REC), laboratory(LAB). Each section may meet for a different activity. A course section may be associated with other sections of different activity types, and registration in the related activities may be required. For example, a course that is a LEC may have a related course section of LAB, and registration in both is required. Such registration requirements are controlled via the data elements in the Section Registration Controls (see the DWADMIN.COURSE_SEC_REG_CONTROL table).

Values:

CLN - Clinical IND Independent: Student works independently with only minimal faculty direction
LAB - Laboratory: Instructing, preparing, and supervising student investigations
LEC - Lecture: Formal presentation, primarily one-way communication
PRE - Preceptorship: Grad Nursing only
REC - Recitation: Students engaged in discussion with faculty
SEM - Seminar: Students carry a major responsibility for preparation and discussion
STU - Studio: Fine Arts

The pattern of days on which a section meets at a particular time and place. A class meeting on Monday, Wednesday and Friday would have "MWF" in DAYS_CODE. The combinations may include any of the following codes.

Values:

M     Monday

T     Tuesday 

W     Wednesday

R     Thursday

F     Friday

S     Saturday

U     Sunday

Fri_Flag   An indicator showing whether or not a course meets on Fridays. A "Y" in this field means the course section meets on Friday. A section often has other meeting day flags (up to 6); for example, it may meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Mon_Flag   An indicator showing whether or not a course meets on Mondays. A "Y" in this field means the course section meets on Monday. A section often has other meeting day flags (up to 6); for example, it may meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Room_Actual_Capacity
  The seating capacity of the room in which the class section is being held. This field may only be null if the room and building have not yet been assigned.

Values:
Valid whole number or null.

Room_Number
  The room number in the building where the course section is being held. If the days and building have not yet been assigned for that course section, the room number may be null.

Values:
Alphanumeric or null

Room_Status_Code
  Identifies whether the room assignment is in time conflict with other sections or special activities. For example, two or more course sections may be scheduled for the same room at the same time and on the same days. If there is no conflict, the field is null.

T      Time Conflict     

C      Course Conflict 

Room_Type
  The type of room, for example, classroom or laboratory, required for this course section. Used to narrow room searches for available rooms.

Values:
Valid whole number.

Sat_Flag
  An indicator showing whether or not a course meets on Saturdays. A "Y" in this field means the course section meets on Saturday. A section often has other meeting day flags (up to 6); for example, it may meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Section_Id

RC010 COURSE SECTION ID

NATURAL ALIAS: SECT-ID-RC

part of the context line for all SRS course screens

The unique identifier for a course section in a specific term. Each section may provide a different teaching activity.

Positions 1-4 are the subject area or academic discipline under which the course is offered, for example, ENGL.

Positions 5-7 are the course number, the identifier for the course at the inventory level: 100-399 are undergraduate level courses; 400-499 are mixed undergraduate and graduate level courses, but reserved primarily for undergraduate courses; 500-599 are mixed undergraduate and graduate level course, but reserved primarily for the graduate and professional courses; 600-989 are for graduate and professional level courses; 990-999 are for graduate and professional level individual study courses.

Positions 8-10 are the section number: 000 are auto-section create courses; 001-099 are lectures and any courses that have only one section; 100-199 are laboratory sections; 200-299 are recitation sections; 300-399 are seminar sections; 400-499 are crosslisted sections; 500-599 are graduate engineering executive masters program sections; 600-699 are reserved for the College of General Studies sections; 700-799 are Wharton executive MBA program sections; and 800-999 are reserved for course sections converted from the previous system.

Start_Time_24hr
calculated from Start_Time Time of day at which a course section meeting starts, in hours/minutes format, using a 24-hour clock. A course section can have up to six meeting patterns. Each meeting pattern consists of one or more days, the time, and the location at which the course section meets. Time of day at which a course section meeting starts, in hours/minutes/meridian format (for example, 0800AM). A course section can have up to six meeting patterns. Each meeting pattern consists of one or more days, the time, and the location at which the course section meets. For example: a course section can meet Mondays and Wednesdays starting at 0900AM, and Tuesdays starting at 0230PM.

Time of day at which a course section meeting ends, in hours/minutes format, using a 24-hour clock. A course section can have up to six meeting patterns. For example: a course section can end Mondays and Wednesdays at 1000, and Tuesdays at 1530.

Term

RC005 TERM, CTF

The academic term during which a course section is offered.

Penn divides the academic year into 3 terms: Fall, Spring, and Summer. Terms are designated by the 4-digit calendar year, followed by a term code. The Spring term code is A, the Summer term code is B, and the Fall term code is C. For example: 1995C means Fall 1995, 1996A means Spring 1996, and 1996B means Summer 1996.

Thu_Flag
  Indicates whether the meeting schedule for this course section includes Thursdays. Y (Yes) for this data element means the course section meets on Thursday. A course section can have up to six meeting patterns. Each meeting pattern consists one or more days, the time, and the location at which the course section meets. For example: a course section can meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Values:

[Null]    The meeting schedule does not include Thursdays.

Y         Yes, meets on Thursdays.

Tue_Flag
  Indicates whether the meeting schedule for this course section includes Tuesdays. Y (Yes) for this data element means the course section meets on Tuesday. A course section can have up to six meeting patterns. Each meeting pattern consists of one or more days, the time, and the location at which the course section meets. For example: a course section can meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
