The 5-character numeric code that uniquely identifies the sponsor, per PennERA. The sponsor may be the agency to which a proposal may be sent, or from which an award has been received. The sponsor may also be the agency that might fund, or has funded, a project involving a protocol (such as a human subjects protocol).

Codes less than or equal to '59999' were assigned to the sponsor by InfoEd (the vendor of the PennERA software). Codes greater than or equal to '60000' were assigned to the sponsor by the Office of Research Services.

Example: '09470' (NATIONAL INSTITUTES OF HEALTH).

The name of the sponsor, in upper case. The value may be may be up to 300 characters in length. This corresponds with the SPONSOR_CODE (the 5-character code). The sponsor may be the agency to which a proposal may be sent, or from which an award has been received. The sponsor may also be the agency that might fund, or has funded, a project involving a protocol (such as a human subjects protocol).

For the name of the sponsor as it is stored in PennERA (where it may be in upper case or in mixed case), see SPONSOR_DESC_AS_IS.

SPONSOR_DESC_AS_IS

The name of the sponsor, as it is stored in PennERA (where it may be in upper case or in mixed case). The value which may be up to 300 characters in length. This corresponds with the SPONSOR_CODE (the 5-character code). The sponsor may be the agency to which a proposal may be sent, or from which an award has been received. The sponsor may also be the agency that might fund, or has funded, a project involving a protocol (such as a human subjects protocol).

For the name of the sponsor in upper case, see SPONSOR_DESC.

Note: If records are sorted by SPONSOR_DESC_AS_IS, values that include lower case letters do not appear in the order expected. For example, 'CYTYC CORPORATION' would appear before 'Cardiovascular
and Interventional Radiology Research and Education Foundation'. Use SPONSOR_DESC if you wish to sort records by the name of the sponsor.

The 5-character numeric code that uniquely identifies the sponsor's grandparent roll-up group, per PennERA.

According to PennERA, a sponsor may have subagencies, which may themselves have subagencies. For example, 'National Cancer Institute/NIH/DHHS' (09472) is a subagency of 'NATIONAL INSTITUTES OF HEALTH' (09470), which is a subagency of 'DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH & HUMAN SERVICES' (09000). In the Data Warehouse, '09000' (DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH & HUMAN SERVICES) is the SPONSOR_GRANDPARENT of '09472' (National Cancer Institute/NIH/DHHS). If a given proposal's sponsor is the National Cancer Institute, the SPONSOR_GRANDPARENT enables you to create reports listing the proposal under the DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH & HUMAN SERVICES, together with proposals whose sponsor is 'DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH & HUMAN SERVICES' and proposals whose sponsor is one of DHHS's subagencies.

Currently, the only sponsor grandparent listed in PennERA is DHHS. If a sponsor has no grandparent according to PennERA, its SPONSOR_GRANDPARENT is the same as its SPONSOR_PARENT.

The 5-character numeric code that uniquely identifies the sponsor's parent roll-up group, per PennERA.

According to PennERA, some sponsors are subagencies of other sponsors. For example, 'National Cancer Institute/NIH/DHHS' (09472) is a subagency of 'NATIONAL INSTITUTES OF HEALTH' (09470). In the Data Warehouse, '09470' (NATIONAL INSTITUTES OF HEALTH) is the sponsor parent of '09472' (National Cancer Institute/NIH/DHHS). If a given proposal's sponsor is the National Cancer Institute, the SPONSOR_PARENT enables you to create reports listing the proposal under the NATIONAL INSTITUTES OF HEALTH, together with proposals whose sponsor is 'NATIONAL INSTITUTES OF HEALTH' and proposals whose sponsor is one of the NIH's institutes or centers.

Currently, there are sponsor parents for the NIH, the National Science Foundation (NSF), and other sponsors that have subagencies listed in PennERA. If the sponsor has no parent according to PennERA, its SPONSOR_PARENT is the same as its SPONSOR_CODE.

SPONSOR_TYPE_DESC

The 50-character description of the sponsor type, per PennERA (the Electronic Research Administration system in use since August 25, 2003). This is used to group sponsors by type of business entity.

UPENN Commercial/Industrial (for-profit enterprises)
UPENN Federal (agencies of the United States federal 
      government)
UPENN Foreign Governments (agencies of governments 
      outside the United States; foreign countries or cities) 
UPENN Foundations - (foundations, per the Internal Revenue 
      Service Code) 
UPENN Hospital/Medical Centers
UPENN Internal (organizations within the University of 
      Pennsylvania; such sponsors usually have provided 
      cost sharing for sponsored projects)
UPENN Other (the sponsor cannot be assigned to another sponsor 
      type)
UPENN Other Non-Federal Governments - agencies of state or
      local governments within the United States 
UPENN Other Non-Profit Organizations (non-profit enterprises
      that are neither foundations nor private associations)
UPENN Private Associations (private associations, per the
      Internal Revenue Service Code)
UPENN Universities (other institutions of higher education;
      such sponsors usually have awarded subcontracts to the
      University of Pennsylvania)
