Windows Millennium Edition (Windows Me)
Windows Millennium Edition (also known as Windows Me), released on September 14, 2000, is the successor to Windows 98 Second Edition. Note that there has been some confusion between Windows Millennium Edition and Windows 2000 Professional because of their similar designations, but that Windows Millennium Edition is targeted at home users whereas Windows 2000 Professional is targeted at office and professional users.
Information Systems & Computing (ISC) will support Windows Millennium Edition for its clients, including off-campus students, only on new Intel-based PCs that ship with Windows Millennium Edition pre-installed. ISC strongly recommends that all other users adopt a "wait and see" attitude, continuing to use previous versions of Windows until after the initial bugs in Windows Millennium Edition are identified and fixed.
When ISC does recommend an upgrade it will be for Pentiums 300 MHz or above that have at least 64 megabytes of RAM. Please refer to ISC's Windows System Specifications to find out which versions of Windows are recommended for your Intel-based computer. The full install of Windows Millennium Edition uses between 300 megabytes and 2 gigabytes of hard disk space, depending on the type of Intel-based PC and choices made during the install.
Issues
There are several known issues with Windows Millennium Edition, a few of which will be especially relevant to Penn's Windows users:Availability
- Your computer may need driver or BIOS upgrades. In the case of Dell computers, please check Dell's Product Readiness Advisor for upgradeability of your particular computer.
- The PennConnect 2000 CD-ROM software installs and runs successfully on Windows Millennium Edition. The appropriate instructions to use are those for Windows 98: ISC will re-label these instructions as soon as possible.
Microsoft is making Windows Millennium Edition available on CD-ROM in three different ways: the full version, at $229, the upgrade from Windows 95 at $90, and the upgrade from Windows 98 or Windows 98 Second Edition at $60, will soon be available from the Computer Connection.
What's new in Windows Millennium Edition
Windows Millennium Edition has several new features. Among the more significant of these new features are:
- System Protection; Windows Millennium Edition won't allow the inadvertent deletion or alteration of critical system files.
- Revert your computer back to a previous state; System Restore can roll your system back to the state it was in just prior to a crash.
- Importing and editing video from your analog or digital camcorder.
- Easier transfer and manipulation of files from your digital camera to your computer.
- The Help and Support area now integrates help for your operating system, computer, and applications into one location.
