HCM_POSITION Table

Explanation
Contains most current available information about positions from Workday. The table includes positions managed in Workday as of July 1, 2019 or thereafter. There may be more than one row per worker if an individual occupies multiple positions.

Common Uses
To determine what positions a Worker holds (or has held), the supervisory organization for each role, when the role appointment begins, the associated job profile code and title, the pay cycle, and the percentage of full-time hours spent in the role.

• The HCM_POSITION table contains records about positions managed in Workday, which came into use on July 1, 2019. In addition to currently filled positions, HCM_POSITION may contain records about open or vacated positions.
  • For information about roles and jobs in the legacy PennWorks and mainframe Personnel/Payroll systems, refer to the COMP_PERSON_ROLE and EMPLOYEE_JOB tables.
• For faculty workers, position records may be related to one or more academic appointments (available in HCM_ACAD_APPOINTMENT).
• Penn_ID and Position_ID should be used to uniquely identify records in HCM_POSITION, and Penn_ID used to join HCM_POSITION to other tables in the Warehouse. Workday ID is an 8 digit field for workers and affiliates unique to Workday.  It is distinct from the Penn ID, which has the same format, but is maintained by Penn Community and is the unique identifier for individuals across Penn’s systems.
• Keep in mind that this is the latest information about an individual with records managed by Workday - the HCM_POSITION table does not keep longitudinal history.
  • Historical snapshots of this information are available in the HCM_POSI_SNAP table, beginning with the JUL-19 period.
  • A full history of changes to positions is available in HCM_POSITION_HISTORY, to faclitate tracking changes to position over time, and in joining actual payments to the contemporaneous position data at the time of the payment.
• You can access an HCM_POSITION row only if you are authorized to access data for the individual's Pri_Penn_Cost_Center or the Penn_Cost_Center for a particular position.
• The HCM_PERSON table can be found in the DWHCM schema.
