SPECIAL PROGRAM Table
(dwst.special_program)
Explanation
Lookup table for special programs.
Contains the special programs codes, descriptions, and a status flag to indicate
whether that special program code is actively in use.
Special Programs further define a students' academic program of study, at
the term level, beyond the what can be defined solely by the students' division,
degree, major and concentration.
Common Uses
- Displaying the actual name of a Special_Program instead of the code that
appears in the Related Table. ("Don't show the codes
in the report. Show the English instead.")

Cautions:
Special programs are maintained in the student's term record in SRS, and are
not part of the Academic Program Summary. In the warehouse, Special_Program
is found in the DEGREE_TERM table (and not in DEGREE_PURSUAL).
If the code is no longer in use, as of the last date this table was refreshed,
the Status_Flag will be 'I'. Active codes, as
of the last date this table was refreshed, will have an Status_Flag of 'A'.
The
Data Warehouse does not maintain a history of when codes were active in the
past.
The beginning character of the Special_Code has defined Business Rules in
SRS:
Values beginning with "A" refer to Penn students on study abroad
programs at other institutions and, if used, will keep the students from
being billed.
Values beginning with "B" refer to Penn students on Office of
International Programs study abroad programs at other institutions and, if
used, will bill
the student based on tables in the student financial services system.
Values beginning with "C" refer to CGS non-degree programs. Values
beginning with "E" refer to School of Education divisions.
Values beginning with "F" refer to foreign students from other
institutions on study abroad programs at Penn. By using this code the students
will not
be billed, will appear on the CER/RCR report under the non-billable column,
and will not be included in the
tuition distribution process. They will continue to be included in the headcount
enrollment reports, degree and course enrollment reports.
Values beginning with "L" refer to Law school/Wharton Grad certification
programs.
Values beginning with "T" refer to special program codes that
need to have exceptions made for them in the tuition calc program.
Values beginning with "W" refer to study away from Penn that are
not study abroad programs and the wemba east and west programs. values beginning
with "x" refer to the Bryn Mawr, Swarthmore and Haverford consortium
programs and will be used only for students who have spent an entire semester
at one of these schools.
When a student academic detail record is created, special program codes "C", "E", "L" and "T" are
carried forward to the next term, while program codes "A", "B", "F",
and "X" are not. Program codes ‘WEE’, ‘WEO’,
'WWE' and ‘WWO’ are carried forward while all other "W" codes
are not.
