HIATUS Table

(dwadmin.hiatus)

Explanation

A hiatus is a non-leave exit from a degree pursual, because of an action either by the student or by the division. There is one record for each hiatus for a student, for every degree for which hiatuses exist. Unlike for leaves of absence (see the LEAVE Table), a student may be on hiatus from one degree pursual and active in another for the same term. In order to have a hiatus record, the student must have returned to the same degree as was left. There will always be a value for Return_Term, since a hiatus implies that the student continued the degree pursual.

Common Uses

  • Determining students who interrupted their work on a degree, then resumed. ("Do more of our students work on their degrees from beginning to end, or do more take breaks in their degree programs?")
  • Analyzing differences between students who go on hiatus and those who do not. ("Who are the students who 'stop out' of their degree programs?")
