Credit_Type

RT324 SCE CREDIT TYPE

NATURAL ALIAS: SC-CR-TP-RT

appears on SRS screens 113, 118, 136, 193

The unit of measurement of the credit statistics for this student enrolled in this course section.
On the student's transcript in SRS, the Credit Type is system generated, based on the student's primary program.

A Course Unit (CU) is the typical unit of measurement for course credit at Penn. The majority of standard semester-long courses are worth one course unit. The Credit (CR) unit of measurement is used at the Dental and Vet Schools -- which follow a quarter system. 6 Credits = 1 Course Unit. A Semester Hour (SH) is the unit of measurement used at the Law School. 3 Semester Hours = 1 Course Unit.

See also Registered_Credit, Earned_Credit, and Quality_Credit in the ENROLLMENT_ALL_V Table.

Values:

CU Credit Unit
SH Semester Hour (3 SH = 1 CU) CR Credit Hour (6 CR = 1 CU)
Earned_Credit

calculated based on the sucessful completion of a course bearing registered credit.

appears on SRS screens 136, 193

Indicates the credit the student is awarded for successful completion of enrollment in a course section. Not every completed course section contributes to Earned_Credit. Certain grades do not earn credit, for example, XX, XC, NG, and AUD.

See also Special_Grading in the COURSE_SECTION Table.

Grade_Point calculated The weighted numeric value for the grade received for the enrollment in the course section. This value is used in the calculation of all grade point averages. It is weighted by Quality_Credit, so that an A received in a course section with 1.5 course units improves the GPA more than an A received in a course section with 0.5 course units.

Courses with marks such as HP, P, and Audit have zero Quality_Credit, zero Grade_Point and do not affect the GPA.

The grade values used, multiplied by the Quality_Credit, to calculate Grade_Point are:

4.0 A+
4.0 A
3.7 A- 3.3 B+ 3.0 B 2.7 B- 2.3 C+ 2.0 C 1.7 C- 1.3 D+ 1.0 D 0.7 D- 0.0 F

Official_Grade

RT315 SCE OFFICIAL GRADE

NATURAL ALIAS: SC-OF-GR-RT

appears on SRS screens 113, 136, 193

Indicates the Official_Grade assigned to the student for this course. This may be different from the Reported_Grade if the student has elected to take the course section Pass/Fail. For example, if the reported grade is B, but the student requested to take the class Pass/Fail, the Official_Grade stores the transformed version of the grade (P). The Official Grade is the grade printed on the transcript.

Owner n/a Data element definition to be supplied when available.
Penn_Id appears on SRS screen 103

The 8-digit identification number assigned to the student when their record was created in the PennCommunity database. No two persons have the same Penn_ID. Only persons affiliated with the University will be assigned a Penn_ID.

Penn_ID is not stored in SRS, but can be used on screen 103 to look up a student. It is populated in the Data Warehouse from a extract from PennCommunity.

Note that because the SSN is still the record key in SRS, it is possible for two records to accidentally get created in SRS with different SSNs, for the same person. When this happens, there will be two different records in the Data Warehouse with the same PennID. Please report all PennID duplicates to either Data Administration, or the Office of the University Registrar.

Previous_Grade

RT320 SCE PRIOR GRADE

NATURAL ALIAS: SC-PR-GR-RT

appears on SRS screen 113

Indicates the previous Reported_Grade assigned to the student for this course section. This value is null if the grade has not been changed.

Values:

See "Official Grade"

Program_Pointer

RT353 SCE PROGRAM POINTER

NATURAL ALIAS: SC-PG-PT-RT

appears on SRS screen 113

Indicates whether this course should be counted towards the career of the students' primary program, secondary program, both, or neither.

See also Career_Pointer(s)

Valid Values:

1 - counts towards the program that is the student's primary program this term
2 - counts towards the program that is the student's seconday program this term
B - counts towards both programs the student is in this term
N - does not count towards any program that the student is enrolled in this term

Business Objects users: to find the degree programs in Degree_Pursual towards which a course is being counted, use the "AA" branch's version of Enrollment. This joins to Degree_Pursual through Assignment, and will automatically join to the correct degree program(s) in Degree_Pursual towards which this course is being counted. You do not need to do your own calculations using the program pointer.

Quality_Credit calculated Earned_Credits that are included in the calculation for the student's grade point average (GPA). For example, a course enrollment may have a registered credit of 1.00, but the grading scheme of the student dictates that the grade will be a mark (such as HP, P, DS) and not a regular grade, so the Quality_Credits for said course enrollment will be zero. Note that if a course is taken Pass/Fail, and the student passes the course, it is not included in Quailty_Credits, and therefore is not included in the GPA calculation. If the student fails the course, the Registered_Credits are included in the Quality_Credit.

Values:

can be blank
