Career
|
AA630 DEFAULT CAREER
NATURAL ALIAS: CAREER-AA
appears on SRS screens 110, 117, 118. Used in the context line on screens
136, 142 |
The career associated with this degree. A career may be
a portion, or it may be all of a student's academic history at the University
of Pennsylvania. Generally, a career corresponds to that portion of a student's
academic record that appears on a single transcript and is associated
with
the academic program in which the student is enrolled. A student may pursue
several careers at the University, and each career will appear on a separate
transcript. For example, a student who has completed an undergraduate career
may come back later and pursue a degree as a Master's or PHD or professional
level career.
Note that coursework can count toward multiple careers. For example,
a student who is submatriculating can have courses that count towards
both the U and the graduate career.
See explanation in the ASSIGNMENT table. See also Restrict_Degree in the DEGREE_PURSUAL_ALL_V Table.

Career Tracking Flag |
AA678 CAREER TRKNG FLAG
NATURAL ALIAS: AP-TRKG-FLG-AA
appears on SRS screen 110 as "AutoTRACK" |
From the Academic Program Summary (APS), this flag determines whether
or not to allow automatic career tracking for Masters-to-PhD and PhD-to-PhD
careers.
By default,
coursework
in
research
Masters degrees
tracks to the transcripts of the PhD. Similarly for multiple PhD careers,
the coursework can track to the same transcript. The autotracking is
controlled by an internal SRS system table.
For
students who should not have their graduate careers track into each other,
this flag can be set to 'N' in SRS, indicating an override to the autotracking.
The flag is set on the "receiving" end, in other words, the
flag means
"do not track coursework from other careers into this career."
Values:
[null]- Track courses to the APS career (default)
N - Do not track courses to the APS career
|
- Classification
|
AA636 CLASSIFICATION
NATURAL ALIAS: AP-CLASS-AA
appears on SRS screens 110, 117 |
The student's classification in this program. For undergraduates, classification
is system-maintained, based on accumulation of earned credit; for graduate
and professional students, it is maintained by the student's division.
Note that because this field is based on accumulation of credit, it
does not necessarily reflect the student's year-in-school. A student
who takes a heavier-than-normal load of courses, or who has many AP/transfer
credits, may be classified in a higher "year" than their actual year-in-school.
Values:

|
Cohort
|
AA675 APS COHORT FLAG
NATURAL ALIAS: COHORT-AA
appears on SRS screen 110 |
The Cohort flag provides a way (in addition to classification) for divisions
to group students within an academic program.
Note that there is no standard definition for the use of any cohort
value: the schools and divisions use this data element internally, and
each has their own definition of what it means to them. For example, for the Nursing School, the values B, I, and F are used for the Accelerated Nursing program:
B = BSN/MSN (means they applied to both the BSN and MSN at the same time)
I = 2nd Degree (applied only to the BSN)
F = RN Return (have an RN, but not a BSN)
and C applies to Nursing submatriculants. However, these same values can mean something completely different to other schools.
Values:

|
Credit_By_Exam |
calculated from the exam credits awarded, found on SRS screen 142 |
Credit awarded to this student for this degree program upon passing a
Penn placement exam administered by a school or anacademic department.
See also Stats_Credit_Type in the DEGREE_PURSUAL_ALL_V Table.
|
Degree_Awarded |
AA666 DEGREE AWARDED
NATURAL ALIAS: DEG-AWRD-AA
found on SRS screens 110, 117 |
The degree awarded by the University of Pennsylvania. The degree awarded
may not be the one that was pursued. For example, a student pursuing
a PHD
may be awarded an AM instead, and they never continue on towards a PhD. In such cases, the AM will appear in this column
once it
has
been
awarded. This will only be true if the student received the masters and never continued on with any PhD work. In such cases, there is only one APS row in SRS.
Note that if the student received a masters along the way to a PhD, and intended to continue with the PhD, there usually are two separate APS records in SRS. The masters is usually put on one SRS record and the other is the continuation of the PhD. In such cases, the masters will not appear in the degree awarded column in the degree pursual table.
IMPORTANT NOTE: For a complete record of all degrees received by a student, consult
the DEGREE_RECEIVED table. See also Restrict_Degree in the DEGREE_PURSUAL_ALL_V Table.
|
Degree_Expected_Term |
AA661 DEG EXPECTED TERM
NATURAL ALIAS: DEG-EXPT-AA
appears on SRS screens 110, 117 |
The term in which the division or department responsible for this student
expects this student to receive this degree. If the student is currently
on leave of absence, this column may be null. If the student is no longer
expected to receive the degree, this value may no longer be accurate.
See also Exit_Terrm in the DEGREE_PURSUAL_ALL_V Table. See also Restrict_Attend_Dates
in the DEGREE_PURSUAL_ALL_V Table.
Penn divides the academic
year into 3 terms or semesters: Fall,Spring, and Summer. Terms are designated
by the 4-digit calendar year, followed
by a term code. The Spring term code is A, the Summer term code is B,
and the Fall term code is C.
|
Degree_Honors1 |
RA250 DEG HONORS
NATURAL ALIAS: DG-HONR1-RA
appears on SRS screen 123 |
Graduation honors associated with this degree, for example, Cum Laude,

|
Degree_Level |
AA615 LEVEL
NATURAL ALIAS: AP-LEVEL-AA
appears on SRS screen 110, |
The academic level of the degree sought by the student. Degree_Level is
used to group degrees across the University.
See also Restrict_Degree in the DEGREE_PURSUAL_ALL_V Table.
Values:
U - UNDERGRADUATE M - MASTERS LEVEL D - DOCTORATE P - PROFESSIONAL
|
Degree_Pursued |
AA611 DEGREE
NATURAL ALIAS: AP-DEG-AA
appears on SRS screen 110 |
The degree that the student is pursuing. A student may pursue more than
one degree at a time. A degree is an academic title pursued through a
division
of a school. For example, students can pursue a Bachelor of Arts degree
through the division of The College of Arts and Sciences; students can
pursue a PHD
through the Graduate division of Arts and Sciences.
Both divisions are within the same school, but the College does
not grant PHDs and GAS does not grant BAs.
Students can pursue more than one degree at the same
time. Such students will have a value in thier Dual_Degree_Type in the
DEGREE_TERM_ALL_V table. See also Division in the DEGREE_PURSUAL_ALL_V Table. See also Restrict_Degree in the DEGREE_PURSUAL_ALL_V Table.
Values:
See DEGREE table
|
Dissertation_Term_Count |
AA44B DISSERTATION TERMS
NATURAL ALIAS: DISS-TRM-AA
appears on SRS screen 103 |
The number of terms a student has been pursuing any PHD. A student must
have been properly registered in a dissertation course in order for this
count to be accurate.
See also Tot_Diss_Term_Count in the DEGREE_PURSUAL_ALL_V Table.
|
Division |
AA610 DIVISION
NATURAL ALIAS: AP-DIV-AA
appears on SRS screen 110 |
The division associated with this degree pursual for this student.
A division is an administrative sub- unit of a school. Schools at Penn
can
be composed
of one or more divisions. A division oversees students as they pursue
degrees within that division.
Examples of Division code include CGS (College of General Studies),
NUR (Nursing Undergraduate), GFP (School of Design Graduate)and GEX (Engineering
and Applied Science Executive).
Divisions can be associated with more than one type of degree. For example,
CGS grants BA and MLA degrees.
While students can pursue multiple degrees from the same division, students
can only pursue one type of degree from the same division at the same
time. For example, a student cannot pursue two masters degrees from
GSE simultaneously. Students can be matriculated into more than one division at the same
time. Such students will have a value in thier Dual_Degree_Type in
the DEGREE_TERM_ALL_V table.
See also Division in the DEGREE_TERM_ALL_V table. Values:
Refer to the DIVISION Table for values.
|
DP_LINK_ID |
system-generated number |
Primary key for DEGREE_PURSUAL_ALL_V. This is an internal index column,
used to join the related term records back to the appropriate degree pursual.
It is re-generated each time a student's records are refreshed from SRS,
and the old value over-written. See also DP_LINK_ID in the DEGREE_TERM,
DEGREE_RECEIVED, MAJOR_MINOR_TERM, ASSIGNMENT, HIATUS, and INTERNAL_COURSE_EQUIV
tables. |
Earned_Credit |
calculated
from Total Credits and Equivalent Credits, as appearing on SRS
screen 118
|
Indicates the total cumulative credit that the student was awarded to
date for successful completion of enrollments for this degree pursual. Not
every completed course section contributed to Earned_Credit. Certain grades
do not earn credit, for example, XX,XC, NG, and AUD. This does not include
the amount of Total_Penn_Eqvlnt_Credit in the DEGREE_PURSUAL_ALL_V Table.
See also Stats_Credit_Type in the DEGREE_PURSUAL_ALL_V Table.
|
Entry_Action_Date |
calculated using Entry_Term and the SRS Term Calendar |
The first day of the term in which the student began pursuing
this degree.
See also Entry_Action in the DEGREE_PURSUAL_ALL_V Table.
Values:
Any valid date (stored in Oracle date format DD-MMM-YY).
|
Entry_Action |
AA642 ENTRY ACTION
NATURAL ALIAS: ENT-ACTN-AA
appears on SRS screen 110 |
Indicates the type of action that caused this Degree_Pursual to be opened
for this student. In some cases, RA (Readmit) and RI(Reinstate) may appear.
See also the Leave_Action in the LEAVE Table. See also Return_Action
in the HIATUS Table. See also Restrict_Attend_Datesin the DEGREE_PURSUAL_ALL_V
Table.
Values:
AD Regular Admit AE Admit - Exchange Student
AJ ADMIT TO JOINT DEGREE PROGR AS Submatric Admit AT Transfer Admit
AV Admit - Visiting Student
AX Admit - External Submatric DD Admit to Dual Degree RA Readmitted RI Reinstated (for judicial suspensions only) TR Internal Transfer DT Degree Transfer within Division (used in the warehouse only*)
Note: RL is an entry action in SRS that you will not find in the DEGREE_PURSUAL_ALL_V
table. To report on Leave of Absence and Returns from Leave, see the LEAVE
table.
Note: DT is the exit action used in the warehouse when someone transfers
to a different degree program within the same division without an actual
exit of 'transfer'. In SRS, this shows up as just one Academic Program
Summary with the latest degree program, but at the term level there are
different degrees in different terms -- all under the same Academic Program
Summary. When the data are extracted to the warehouse, because of the
relational structure that joins a degree pursual to a degree term, the
first degree-related data would be "orphaned" from it's corresponding
degree pursual. So, in the warehouse, we scrub the data and give the
first degree program an exit of DT and open the second with an entry
of DT. See also Exit_Action.
Note: the entry action of CP, Continuing PhD Student, will not be displayed
in DEGREE_PURSUAL_ALL_V. This entry action is used for PhD students who
received a Master's degree on the way to getting
the PhD, and because all PhD academic program activity is collapsed into
one degree pursual in the warehouse, this is not considered a "new"
entry into a program. CP does, however, appear in the census extract.
See the CEN_STDT_ACADEMIC_PROGRAM table..
|
Entry_Term |
AA640 ENTRY TERM
NATURAL ALIAS: ENT-TERM-AA
appears on SRS screen 110 |
The term the student first enrolled in classes for this division and degree.
This may not be the student's first term at Penn.
Penn divides the academic year into 3 terms or semesters: Fall, Spring,
and Summer. Terms are designated by the 4-digit calendaryear, followed
by a term code. The Spring term code is A, the Summer term code is B,
and the Fall term code is C.
See also Entry_Action in the DEGREE_PURSUAL_ALL_V Table. See also Restrict_Attend_Dates
in the DEGREE_PURSUAL_ALL_V Table.
For example: 1995C means Fall 1995, 1996A means Spring 1996, 1996B means

Exit Actions in SRS, that do not appear in DEGREE_PURSUAL_ALL_V: AL, FL, LV, EG
CAUTIONS:
DT is an exit action used only in the Data Warehouse, and not
in SRS. In SRS, when a student changes their degree pursual within the
same division the APS does not close. The relational structure of the
tables in the Warehouse makes it necessary to distinguish between the
different degree pursuals, even when they are within the same division.
See also Entry_Action.
SRS exit actions of LV, AL and FL do not appear on
any record in DEGREE_PURSUAL_ALL_V; the exit remains null even when the student
is
on leave; the LEAVE_FLAG is changed to "Y".
There is no exit of EG (expected graduation) in the warehouse. Degree
Pursual records of students who have not exited and have not yet graduated
will
have
a null
exit,
instead
of the
SRS
exit
action
of
EG.
Exits of AL (administrative leave), FL (leave with Library access),
LV (leave of absence) are not recorded in DEGREE_PURSUAL_ALL_V; students
on any of these types of leave will have their Leave_Flag set to 'Y'.
See the LEAVE table for details on student leaves of absence. |
Exit_Term |
AA650 EXIT TERM
NATURAL ALIAS: EXIT-TRM-AA
appears on SRS screen 110 |
The last term the student pursued this degree in this division. The value
may be null if the student has not exited the degree program. A leave
of absence is not considered an exit; students on leave will have a null
Exit_Term. The value in Exit_Term will reflect the last term the student
was actually active in the
degree
program (the last term that exists in the SRS term array for this program,
regardless of whether there is registration activity in that term). It
is not necessarily the exit term found on the SRS screen 110.
See also Exit_Action and Exit_Reason in the DEGREE_PURSUAL_ALL_V Table.
See also Restrict_Attend_Dates in the DEGREE_PURSUAL_ALL_V Table.
|
External_Transfer_Credit |
calculated from the transfer credits awarded, as
appearing on SRS screen 142 |
For this degree program, the total credit awarded by Penn for this student's
coursework completed at another institution.
See also Pre_Freshman_Credit, and Status_Credit_Type in the DEGREE_PURSUAL_ALL_V Table.
|
Final_Phd_Exam_Date |
n/a |
Discontinued Column:
This column contains data that was formerly entered onto SRS screen 137. Effective in 2003, that screen now is only used for undergraduate language requirement data.
PHD candidacy exam data, which now comes from SRS screens 144 and 146, can now be found in the PHD_DISSERTATION table.
|
GPA |
RP190 CUM GPA
NATURAL ALIAS: CUM-GPA-RP
appears on SRS screen 118 |
A cumulative measure of the student's academic success for this degree
program. It is calculated by dividing the Grade_Points by Quality_Credit.
This value can range from 0.0 to 4.0.
See also Grade_Points and Quality_Credit in the DEGREE_PURSUAL_ALL_V
Table.
|
Grade_Points |
RP130 CUM GRADE POINTS
NATURAL ALIAS: CUM-GPTS-R
appears on SRS screen 118 |
The sum of grade points for all enrollments to date which are assigned
to this degree pursual.
Grade points are calculated by multiplying the numeric grade equivalent
and the Quality_Credit for an enrollment. This value is used in the calculation
of the Gpa in the DEGREE_PURSUAL_ALL_V Table.
See also Grade_Point in the ENROLLMENT_ALL_V Table and Term_Grade_Points
in the DEGREE_TERM_ALL_V Table.
|
Graduation_Checkout_Status |
AA663 DEG_CHECKOUT_STATUS
NATURAL ALIAS: DEG-C-ST-AA
appears on SRS screen 117
|
Indicates a student's progress through graduation checkout
for this academic program.
Values:
[Null] Not applied
1 Paid diploma fee 2 Applied for graduation
3 Paid diploma fee & applied for graduation
4 Cleared academically not financially
5 Cleared for graduation
A Applied for degree audit
C Degree audit completed
Note: Both 4 and 5 are used for graduation; when someone is placed on status = 4,
they are still processed for graduation. The 4 remains permanently as their graduation checkout status, even after any financial holds have been cleared.
|
Graduation_Checkout_Term |
AA662 DEG CHECKOUT TERM
NATURAL ALIAS: DEG-CHCK-AA
appears on SRS screens 110, 117 |
The term when the student had his or her degree requirements examined
by the appropriate office. If the student received the degree, this is the
same as the term the degree was received. Note: This is not necessarily
the same as Last_Degree_Term in the DEGREE_PURSUAL_ALL_V Table.
Penn divides the academic year into 3 terms or semesters: Fall,Spring,
and Summer. Terms are designated by the 4-digit calendar year, followed
by a term code. The Spring term code is A, the Summer term code is B,
and the Fall term code is C.
Example: 1995C means Fall 1995, 1996A means Spring 1996, 1996B means
Summer 1996
See also Restrict_Attend_Dates in the DEGREE_PURSUAL_ALL_V Table.
|
Internal_Transfer_Credit
|
calculated from credit as it appears on SRS screen
142 |
The total credit awarded by Penn for this student's degree program for
coursework associated with another degree program at Penn.
See also Stats_Credit_Type in the DEGREE_PURSUAL_ALL_V Table.
|
Last_Activity_Date |
n/a |
The date this record was downloaded via the SRS extract process and loaded
into the Warehouse. Values:
Any valid date (stored in Oracle date format DD-MMM-YY). Note: Business
Objects users may use the format MM/DD/YYYY in the query panel to look
for dates.
|
Last_Degree_Term |
calculated |
The most recent term the student was pursuing this degree. This is not
necessarily the same as Exit_Term in the DEGREE_PURSUAL_ALL_V Table, even
if the student has exited the program. This is the last term for which
there is a degree term record -- that is, the latest record that exists
in the SRS Term Array that applies to this academic program.
See also the DEGREE_TERM Table. See also Restrict_Attend_Dates in the
DEGREE_PURSUAL_ALL_V Table.
|
Leave_Flag |
calculated |
Indicates whether the student is on leave for this term.
To report on a students leave history, see the LEAVE table. See also Restrict_Attend_Dates in the DEGREE_TERM_ALL_V Table.
Values:
[null] Not on leave Y On leave
|
Owner |
n/a |
Column created for use if/when we move to department-based security in
the student data collection. |
Penn_Id |
appears on SRS screen 103 |
The 8-digit identification number assigned to the student when their
record was created in the PennCommunity database. No two persons have
the same Penn_ID. Only persons affiliated with the University will be
assigned a Penn_ID.
Penn_ID is not stored in SRS, but can be used on screen 103 to look
up a student. It is populated in the Data Warehouse from a extract
from PennCommunity.
Note that because the SSN is still the record key in SRS, it is possible
for two records to accidentally get created in SRS with different SSNs,
for the same person. When this happens, there will be two different
records in the Data Warehouse with the same PennID. Please report all
PennID duplicates to either Data Administration, or the Office of the
University Registrar.
|
Foreign_Language_Code |
AA4FK LANGUGE CODE
Natural Alias: LANG-CD-AA
appears on SRS screen 137 |
