CEN_STDT_MAJOR_MINOR Table - Data Element Index

Concentration One specific area of study within a major. For example: AMH (American History) is a concentration within History.

Values:

Refer to CONCENTRATION table.

Major_Minor_Order A number from 1 to 3 that indicates the order of the major or minor within the academic program. This is used only for sequencing purposes and does not imply that one major or minor is more important than another.

See the CEN_STDT_MAJOR_MINOR Table for additional information.

The CEN_STDT_MAJOR_MINOR Table differs in data structure from the MAJOR_MINOR_TERM Table. Refer to the MAJOR_MINOR_TERM Table for the differences and additional information.

Major

The academic area which makes up a major component of a student's work in this academic program. For graduate programs, this is the graduate group. For example: a student may have a major in ENGL (English).

Values:

Refer to the MAJOR table.

Minor

The academic area which makes up a minor component of a student's work in the academic program. For example: a student may have a minor in CHEM (Chemistry).

Values:

Refer to the MAJOR table.

Penn_Id

The 8-digit identification number assigned to the student by the PENNcard system. No two persons have the same Penn_ID. Only persons affiliated with the University will be assigned a Penn_ID.

Program_Order

A number from 1 to 2 that distinguishes one academic program from another. For example: a Dual Degree student can pursue a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from the Engineering School and a Bachelor of Science from the Wharton School The numbers 1 and 2 would distinguish one academic program from another. A student pursuing only one degree would have a Program_Order of 1.

When a student is pursuing two degrees at the same time, the schools where each degree is being pursued are both administratively responsible for the student. Each school makes sure the student meets the related requirements and they coordinate on matters of leaves and graduation.

Ssn The student's Social Security number; currently used by Penn as the student's identification number. A Social Security number is a unique number assigned to an individual by the federal Social Security Administration. This is a 9-digit numeric character without dashes, for example, 777777777. For foreign students and students who have requested not to use their Social Security number, this number is assigned by Penn.
Term The term in which information about this student's major, minor, and/or concentration, in this academic program, applies.

Penn divides the academic year into 3 terms: Fall, Spring, and Summer. Terms are designated by the 4-digit calendar year, followed by a term code. The Spring term code is A, the Summer term code is B, and the Fall term code is C. For example: 1995C means Fall 1995, 1996A means Spring 1995, and 1996B means Summer 1996.
