CEN_COURSE_SECTION Table - Data Element Index

Activity_Group

Identifies a selection of course sections to which a student must limit enrollments for a particular course. Activity_Group is only used by certain academic departments. For those, it is only used in cases where, for courses with course sections having more than one activity (ie., both lectures and labs), an arbitrary combination of enrollments will not satisfy registration requirements. For example: MATH130001, with an activity of LEC, and MATH130201, with an activity of REC, belong to Activity_Group 1. MATH130003, with activity LEC; MATHC130221, with activity REC; and MATH130222, with activity REC; belong to Activity_Group 3. A student enrolling in a lecture from Activity_Group 1 must take a recitation from Activity_Group 1 and not from Activity_Group 3.

Values:

[Null] Not grouped
1 Group 1 sections
2 Group 2 sections
3 Group 3 sections
4 Group 4 sections
5 Group 5 sections
6 Group 6 sections
7 Group 7 sections
8 Group 8 sections
9 Group 9 sections

Audits The total number of students auditing this course section as of the Census Date. Auditors are students who are formally enrolled but do not receive credit or grades for this course section. For example: as of the Census Date, 3 students have audited this course section. The Census Date is one week after the close of the drop period for the term.
Available_Seats
A system-maintained tally of seats left to be filled for this course section as of the Census Date. Unclaimed permits and unclaimed authorizations do not count against the number of available seats. For example: as of the Census Date, 5 seats remain to be filled for CLST001003. The Census Date is one week after the close of the drop period for the term.

Permits guarantee a student his or her enrollment in a course section even if it will bring enrollment over the maximum allowed. Permits are valid only during Advance Registration and Drop/Add.

Authorizations allow a student to enroll in a course section after all valid students have been enrolled and if there are remaining seats. Authorizations are valid only during Advance Registration.

Credit_Connector Indicates the amount or range of credit for which a student is allowed to register for this course section. For example: ARCH999000 is marked as V (Variable Credit Course). Because the credit range for ARCH999000 is 1.00 to 2.00, the student is allowed to register for 1.5 credits.

See also Min_Credit and Max_Credit in the CEN_COURSE_SECTION Table.

Values:

F Fixed credit course: credit will print in the Course Catalog as a
fixed amount; student is allowed to register for the fixed credit
amount only and the limit will be enforced.

V Variable credit course: credit will print in the Course Catalog
as a range; student is allowed to register for credits within the
range printed and the limits will be enforced.

A Alternate credit course: credit will print in the Course Catalog
as an alternate amount; student is allowed to register for one or
the other credit printed and individual registrations may be
altered only to 1 credits or 2 credits.

T To be arranged: credit will print in the Course Catalog as
"arranged:" student is allowed to register for credits as approved
      by the department.
Credit_Type The unit of measurement for the quantitative credit value of a course section. Different divisions use different units. For example: the Law School uses Semester Hours (SH).

Values:

CU Course Units
SH Semester Hours
CR Credit Units
Drops Total number of students that were dropped from this course section as of the Census Date including system-dropped registration requests as well as student-dropped enrollments. For example: as of the Census Date, 2 students were dropped from this course section. The Census Date is one week after the close of the drop period for the term.
End_Date

The last day of the term or session on which this course section was taught. This date adheres to the term calendar unless changed by the department offering the course section. For example: for the term 1995C, Dec 8, 1995 was the last day on which CPLN661101 was taught.

Date formats in the Warehouse depend on the query tool you are using (Business Objects, GQL, SAS, SQL*Plus) and/or the settings you have established for formatting dates on your computer. For example: dates in Business Objects with Windows may be presented in the mmddyy format with a slash (/) separator, e.g. 5/31/96.

Enrollment The total number of students registered for this course section as of the Census Date. For example: as of the Census Date, 23 students registered for this course section. The Census Date is one week after the close of the drop period for the term.
Expected_Enroll The number of students expected to enroll in this course section. It is also used for computations in the classroom search facility. For example: the course section has an expected enrollment of 32 students.
Extended_Title Extended description of the course section title. An extended title is appended to a title. For example: In 1995C, course section AFAM400302 had a title of "WEB DuBois' Social Ideas" and an extended title of "West Philadelphia as a Test Case."
Grading_Status This data element will usually be null since grade sheets are produced and returned after the Census Date.

The status of grade sheets produced for this course section as of the Census Date. The Census Date is one week after the close of the drop period for the term.

Values:

[Null] No grade sheet produced
1 Grade sheet produced (missing grade sheet)
2 Grade sheet submitted on time
3 Grade sheet submitted late

Values:

[Null] Penn Campus
CI Cigna
CP Colonial Penn
Max_Credit The greatest number of credits for this course section for which a student may register. This data element is only used by SRS in conjunction with variable or alternate credit courses and will validate a student's requested credit during registration.

See also Credit_Connector in the CEN_COURSE_SECTION Table.

Max_Enroll The maximum number of students allowed to enroll in this course section. When this number is reached, no more requests for enrollment are accepted unless a student receives a permit. It is also used for computations in the classroom search facility. For example: 30 students are allowed to enroll in this course section.
Min_Credit

Minimum amount of credit for which a student may take this course section. It must be less than or equal to the Max_Credit. For example: the minimum credit for which a student may have taken DENT800001 in Spring 1995 is 54.0 credit units.

See also Max_Credit in the CEN_COURSE_SECTION Table.

Min_Enroll Minimum number of students required for enrollment to prevent the course section from being canceled. For example: the minimum enrollment to prevent the course section from being cancelled is 17.

Values:
Number from 0 and 999

Requests A system maintained tally of registration requests. It includes all requests whether or not they were satisfied. For example: 152.
Schedule_Print_Flag Indicates whether this course section will print in the Course Timetable (CTT), the Course and Room Roster (CRR), or the Freshman Timetable (FTT). For example: null means that the course section will print in the CTT and the CRR.

Values:

[Null] Print in CTT and CRR
N Do not print in any publications
F Print in FTT only

Scheduling_Priority

Used in Advanced Registration processing to determine which students receive higher priority to enroll in this course section. For example: seniors receive more priority then freshmen.

If this data element is null then the student is enrolled or rejected for the course section under the normal enrollment rules.

Section_Control

Used to determine whether a course section will appear on class lists, grade rosters, and transcripts. It is also used to determine whether a course has auto-section create capabilities (the course section is created each term automatically). For example: T (the course section will appear on the class list and transcript but not on the grade roster).

Values:

[Null] Appears on all class lists, grade rosters, and transcripts.
R Appears on class lists only.

A Artificial registration - Does not appear on any class lists,
           grade rosters, and transcripts.
Section_Dept The academic department that developed the course section. Multiple subject areas may be administered by one department. For example: the section department for both ITAL995002 and PRTG110680 is ROML.

See also Subject_Area and Section_Division in the CEN_COURSE_SECTION Table.

See also Division in the CEN_COURSE_SECTION Table.

Section_Division The division that offers this course section. Section_Division is used when a section is administered by a division rather than a department.

Examples of division codes include CGS (College of General Studies), NUR (undergraduate Nursing), and WEM (Wharton Executive MBA Program).

See also Division in the CEN_COURSE_SECTION Table.

Section_Id The unique identifier for a specific course section in a term: Characters 1 to 4 contain the subject area code (subject area is the alpha code of the academic discipline under which the course is offered). Characters 5 to 7 comprise the course number. Characters 8 to 10 comprise the course section. For example: FREN 130301 is FREN (French, subject area), 130 (course number), 301 (section number).

The components that make up Section_Id (subject area, course Id, and section Id) are not available in the CEN_COURSE_SECTION Table. See the COURSE_SECTION Table for these data elements.

Values:

Session_Dup Indicates whether more than one section of the course can be taken for credit during any session of a term. If Session_Dup is Y (Yes), then multiple sections are allowed and the Max_Credit for the course section must reflect the number of sections that can be taken in one term. For example: FNCE399001 might be Y (Yes) for a particular term.

See also Max_Credit in the CEN_COURSE_SECTION Table.

Values:

Y Yes
N No

See also Grade_Scheme in the CEN_STDT_ENROLLMENT Table.

Values:

[Null] Normal grading, student option allowed
GR Normal grading, no student option allowed
PF Pass/Fail only

XX Exclude credit and include in full time/part time
AR Artificial Registration.
Start_Date The first day of the term or session which this course section is taught. The date is determined by the begin and end dates in the system term calendar. For course sections that are offered the full academic term, this date will generally be null. A date will appear for all special sessions. For example: August 20, 1998.

Status Indicates the availability of the course section as of the Census Date: O (Open), C (Closed), H (Hold), X (Cancelled). The Census Date is one week after the close of the drop period for the term.
Subtitle_Code The official subtitle for a course section. A subtitle can serve as a replacement for the regular title when a course section is offered during a specific term, or the subtitle can serve as an addition to the regular title.

Values:

001 to 999

When you enter a subtitle code on a course termfile record,
SRS replaces the section title text with the subtitles
for the matching subtitles code.
Subtitle_Print_Flag
Controls the relationship between the fields, Section_Title_Text, Course_Title_Text, Section_Subtitle_Code, and Section_Extended_Title_Text for purposes of printing titles.

Values:

[Null] Normal, print course section title, followed by extended
           subtitle if present.
S Subtitle, print course inventory title followed by the course
           section title.
E Extended, print only the extended title.
Term The term, as of the Census Date, that this course section was offered. Penn divides the academic year into 3 terms: Fall, Spring, and Summer. Terms are designated by the 4-digit calendar year, followed by a term code. The Spring term code is A, the Summer term code is B, and the Fall term code is C. For example: 1995C means Fall 1995; 1996A means Spring 1996; and 1996B means Summer 1996.
Timetable_Instructor The primary instructor or instructors for this course section as of the Census Date. This name is initially provided by a link to the Payroll system (PBP) based on the instructor's ID number. If no ID number is entered, the value defaults to Staff. Note: The instructor's name may be changed and may not match the ID. The format of this data element therefore varies. For example: the values for this data element may appear as Staff; Evans G; Bello/Spivak; Halbfass/Schnei.
Unclaimed_Permits

The total number of students holding unclaimed permits or unclaimed authorizations for this course section as of the Census Date. These students received permits or authorizations to take this course but did not enroll. For example: for this course section, 3 students have unclaimed permits.

See also Available_Seats in the CEN_COURSE_SECTION Table.
