APPROVED_ACADEMIC_PROGRAMS Table - Data Element Index

Division

The division associated with this degree pursual for this student. A division is an administrative sub- unit of a school. Schools at Penn can be composed of one or more divisions. A division oversees students as they pursue degrees within that division.

Examples of Division code include CGS (College of General Studies), NUR (Nursing Undergraduate), GFP (School of Design Graduate)and GEX (Engineering and Applied Science Executive).

Divisions can be associated with more than one type of degree. For example, CGS grants BA and MLA degrees.

While students can pursue multiple degrees from the same division, students can only pursue one type of degree from the same division at the same time. For example, a student cannot pursue two masters degrees from GSE simultaneously.

Students can be matriculated into more than one division at the same time. Such students will have a value in thier Dual_Degree_Type in the DEGREE_TERM_ALL_V table.

See also Division in the DEGREE_TERM_ALL_V table.

Values: Refer to the DIVISION Table for values.

Degree

A degree is an academic title pursued through a division of a school. For example, students can pursue a Bachelor of Arts degree through the division of The College of Arts and Sciences; students can pursue a PHD through the Graduate division of Arts and Sciences. Both divisions are within the same school, but the College does not grant PHDs and GAS does not grant BAs.

Students can pursue more than one degree at the same time. Such students will have a value in thier Dual_Degree_Type in the DEGREE_TERM_ALL_V table.

See also Division in the DEGREE_PURSUAL_ALL_V Table.

See also Restrict_Degree in the DEGREE_PURSUAL_ALL_V Table.

Values: See DEGREE table

Major

The academic area which makes up a major or minor component of the program. For graduate programs, this is often referred to as the "Graduate Group." In the Wharton school, the Major is referred to as "Concentration."

The Approved Academic Program table does not have a column that indicates whether the row applies to "Minors only". Academic areas of study that are used only for Minors can be identified using the Start/Stop term of 1943C.

See also Restrict_Major_Minor.

Values: See MAJOR table

Concentration Optional: further defines a Major.
In SRS, majors can be associated with concentrations. Concentrations cannot exist without majors. Minors do not have concentrations.

Values: See CONCENTRATION table.

Degree_Level The academic level of the degree sought by the student. Degree_Level is used to group degrees across the University.

See also Restrict_Degree in the DEGREE_PURSUAL_ALL_V Table.

Values:

M - MASTERS LEVEL

School

A school is an administrative unit in charge of academic departments, courses, and faculty.

Degree_Granting

A flag that indicates whether or not this Academic Program grants a degree. Programs with a value of 'N' in this column cannot graduate students (give them a degree) and students in such programs will not have an Exit_Action of 'GD'.

Values:

null - Degree Granting is allowed for this program

N - Not a Degree Granting program

Start_Term The term in which this combination of Division, Degree, Major and Concentration became a valid program. May be null (meaning it was valid since the inception of SRS). Note: a value of 1943C in this column has nothing to do with the start of the program: this is an "internal SRS code" which indicates the program may be used for Minors only (and not Majors).
Stop_Term The term in which this combination of Division, Degree, Major and Concentration became invalid; after this term this combination may no longer be used (but is still valid for older terms, prior to the Stop_Term). May be null (meaning it is currently a valid combination).
