V_STDNT_LEVEL table

(dwngss.v_stdnt_level)

Explanation

This is a validation table, containing the codes and descriptions for student Levels. For students, the Level associated with their curriculum can determine what courses they are allowed to enroll in, and controls which courses appear on their transcript. A student who is in multiple curricula that are all on one level -- such as a dual-degree undergraduate student -- would have all of their coursework on the same transcript, as specified by the undergraduate Level. A student who is in multiple curricula that are on different levels -- for example, a submatriculant -- will have multiple transcripts, each related to the corresponding Level.
Coursework can be associated with more than one Level, but only as an adminstrative override, and only after the student's enrollment in that course has been graded and has moved to academic history.

Source

The warehouse V_STDNT_LEVEL table is refreshed in batch mode from the Operational Data Store (ODS), which gets its data from the Banner database. The UPENN_ODS source table is SATURN_STVLEVL.

Cautions and notes

  • In the legacy SRS sytem, there were over 100 career codes that controlled how coursework appeared on transcripts. In Banner, there are 12 levels, so some things that used to appear on separate transcripts will now be appear on the same transcript in the new system.
  • There are some data elements that can be associated with a student Level in the ST_DEGREE_TERM table that may be the same value for multiple curricula. If those elements are numeric, be careful not to incorrectly use aggregates. For example, "earned credit" should be summed by restricting the results to either just the primary program, or to participants in a specific program, to avoid inflating the number because of concurrent programs at the same level.
