Cautions and notes

  • Students can have multiple email addresses; each address has a type. Students will have one of their email addresses identified as the "Preferred" email; see the preferred indicator column in ST_EMAIL.
  • Email type of 'DIR' has a description of "Directory" but this value is no longer in use. It it for historical purposes only. Email addresses that come from the Penn Directory will have an email type of either 'PEN' or 'PERS'
  • PEN emails are only populated from the Penn directory. PERS emails can come from the directory or from the admissions systems.
  • Email addresses provided by the issuing school or department for a student in the directory are loaded into Banner as PEN. In addition, email addresses entered by a student in the directory that is like %upenn.edu% and can be verified by having a corresponding pennkey on their student record, will be loaded as a PEN email. If the student provided an email address like %upenn.edu% in the directory and it was neither matched by their department's provided email address nor matched to the student's pennkey, then this email will tbe sent to Banner as a PERS email.
