V_DIVISION table

Explanation

This is a validation table containing the values and descriptions for Division codes. This table also contains the legacy (SRS) value for the Division, and both a short and long description -- see Cautions and notes, below.

Division is a component of a student's curriculum. Typically, a student's curriculum is defined by the combination of Division + Degree + Major (+optional Concentration). At Penn, Divisions are always associated with Schools: a School can have many Divisions, each Division belongs to one and only one School.

The warehouse V_DEPARTMENT table is refreshed in batch mode from the Operational Data Store (ODS), which gets its data from the Banner database. The UPENN_ODS source table is SATURN_STVDEPT.

Cautions and notes

• In the Banner database and vendor-delivered documentation, Divisions are referred to as "colleges." At Penn, we still call these Divisions.
• Division codes have descriptions in the Banner baseline table, STVCOLL. The description fields are limited to 30 characters, so Penn has developed a custom solution for storing a longer descriptive name for divisions. Long descriptions have specified start and end terms. When looking up the long description for a Division code, you can either 1) use the V_DIVISION table and look for the code that falls within the desired start/end term, or 2) use the V_DIVISION_V view to get the most recent description.
• Division codes in Banner are 2-charaters. Because the legacy system (SRS) had 3-character codes for divisions, all Division codes had to be transformed in Pennant Student Records. To facilitate referencing older data collections and longitudinal reporting, the legacy code for Division is stored in the V_DIVISION table and in the V_DIVISON_V view alongside the new Banner code.
