V_DEPARTMENT table

Explanation

This is a validation table, containing the values and descriptions for the Department codes associated courses, and also Department codes associated with major, minors and concentrations.

The warehouse V_DEPARTMENT table is refreshed in batch mode from the Operational Data Store (ODS), which gets its data from the Banner database. The UPENN_ODS source table is SATURN_STVDEPT.

Cautions and notes

• Department codes have descriptions in the Banner baseline table, STVDEPT. The description fields are limited to 30 characters, so Penn has developed a custom solution for storing a longer descriptive name for departments. Long descriptions have specified start and end terms. When looking up the long description for a Department code, you can either 1) use the V_DEPARTMENT table and look for the code that falls within the desired start/end term, or 2) use the V_DEPARTMENT_V view to get the most recent long description.
