COURSE SECTION GRADE MODE table

(dwngss_ps.crse_sect_grade_mode)

Explanation

Contains all of the grades modes at which a course section can be offered. Grade modes are set up in the course catalog. In the CLSS system, when a section is created, the course attributes are used to identify the grade modes that students can select when registering for the course section.

Source

The warehouse CRSE_SECTION table is refreshed in batch mode from the Operational Data Store (ODS), which gets its data from the Banner database. The UPENN_ODS source table is SATURN_SSBSECT and SATURN_SCRATTR.

Cautions and notes

  • The CRSE_SECT_GRADE_MODE table has multiple rows per course section per term. At Penn, grade modes follow the student, not the course. A single "preferred" grade mode value is not assigned to the course section. Instead, the section is associated with all of the potential grade modes. The available and program-appropriate grade modes are presented to the student to choose from at the time of registration. The chosen grade mode is then stored on the student's registration in that course section, as found in the ST_ENROLLMENT table. The warehouse validation table for grade modes is V_GRADE_MODE.
  • Pass Fail is one type of Grade Mode (code 'P')
  • Audit is not a Grade Mode. In Pennant Student Records, when a student audits a course, they get a registration status of 'AU'. See the validation table V_REG_STATUS.
